YouTube is two search engines in one: a search box with its own ranking system, and a recommendation feed that drives most viewing. It is also one of the most cited domains in Google's own answers. When Pew Research analysed 68,879 real Google searches from March 2025, Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the three most frequently cited sources in both AI summaries and standard results (Pew, July 22, 2025). So a strong YouTube presence pays out three times: on YouTube, in Google's video results, and in AI answers.
This guide covers the YouTube platform itself. For videos hosted on your own site (watch pages, video sitemaps, key moments markup), start with Image & Video SEO.
How YouTube search and recommendations work#
YouTube documents the three things its search ranking looks at (How YouTube search works):
| Signal | What YouTube says it means | What you control |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well the title, tags, description and video content match the query | Words in the title, description, spoken script and captions |
| Engagement | Overall engagement, such as watch time of a video for a particular query | Whether the video delivers what the title promised, fast |
| Quality | Signals that a channel demonstrates expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness on a topic | A consistent topical focus and a channel that is clearly about something |
Results are also personalised by search and watch history when the viewer has them turned on, so two people rarely see identical results. Do not trust a rank check from your own logged-in account.
Recommendations (Home, Up next, the Shorts feed) use a different mix: watch and search history, subscriptions, likes and dislikes, "Not interested" feedback, and satisfaction surveys that YouTube says help it understand "satisfaction, not just watch time" (How YouTube recommendations work). The practical reading: clicks get you tested, satisfied viewers get you distributed.
Keyword research for video#
Video demand is not the same as web demand. Some queries want a page ("python dict comprehension syntax"), some want a video ("how to replace a bike chain"). Check both surfaces:
- Google the query. If a video pack or video results with key moments show on page one, Google has decided this intent is partly visual. Those are your best targets, because one video can rank on YouTube and Google.
- Type the seed into YouTube's search box. Autocomplete suggestions are real queries people type on YouTube.
- Use YouTube Studio's Research tab (under Analytics) to see what your viewers and YouTube as a whole search for, including content-gap queries where viewers found little to watch. Studio menus move around, so check YouTube Help for the current path.
- Read your existing search traffic. In YouTube Analytics, the traffic source "YouTube search" lists the terms that already find you. Those are the topics to go deeper on.
Then apply the usual keyword research process: cluster related phrasings, pick one primary query per video, and plan a series rather than one-offs. Series build the topical consistency that the quality signal rewards.
Packaging: titles, thumbnails and the first 30 seconds#
On YouTube, the title and thumbnail act as one unit, the way a title tag and meta description do on Google. They decide whether you get the click; the opening seconds decide whether the click counts.
- Put the primary query early in the title, phrased the way people search. "Replace a Bike Chain in 5 Minutes (No Special Tools)" beats "Weekend Maintenance Vlog #14".
- Make the thumbnail say something the title does not. Repeating the title in giant text wastes the space. Show the result, the before-and-after, or the face of the person who will teach it.
- Follow YouTube's current thumbnail specs. As of October 2026 YouTube's help page asks for a 16:9 image (9:16 for Shorts), a minimum width of 640 pixels, and allows uploads up to 3840 x 2160; custom thumbnails need a verified account (Add video thumbnails).
- Deliver the promise in the first 30 seconds. Skip the long intro and the "before we start, subscribe" request. If the title says "in 5 minutes", show step one inside the first minute.
Test instead of guessing#
YouTube Studio's Test & compare runs up to three titles, three thumbnails, or title-and-thumbnail combinations against each other, usually within two weeks. The option with the highest watch time wins and is shown to all viewers (YouTube Help). It is desktop-only in Studio, and it does not work on Shorts, scheduled live streams or Premieres (Premieres become eligible once they convert to standard videos). Because the winner is picked on watch time, not click-through rate, it actively punishes clickbait. The same principle drives SEO testing on the web.
Descriptions, chapters and captions#
These are the parts of a video that machines can read as text.
Descriptions. Write the first two lines for humans (they show before "more") and use the rest to summarise what the video covers in plain sentences, with links to the resources you mention. Tags matter far less than the title, description and spoken content, and YouTube lists them only as one input to relevance.
Chapters. Timestamps in the description become chapters on YouTube and can become key moments in Google Search, which Google documents as one of three ways to label video segments (Video SEO best practices). YouTube's rules for manual chapters (Video chapters):
- The first timestamp must be
00:00. - List at least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- Each chapter must last at least 10 seconds.
00:00 What you need
00:42 Remove the old chain
02:10 Measure and cut the new chain
03:35 Join with a quick link
04:20 Check the shiftingLabel chapters with the words people search ("Measure and cut the new chain"), not inside jokes. Each label is a potential Google key moment.
Captions. Upload accurate captions or correct the automatic ones. Auto captions mangle product names, jargon and accents, and the transcript is the fullest text representation of what you actually said. It helps viewers watching on mute or in another language, and gives any system that reads the transcript something accurate to work with. Say your primary topic out loud early in the video, in the words people search.
Video in Google Search, Discover and AI answers#
YouTube videos appear in Google's video results, video packs, key moments, Discover, and as cited sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no separate ranking system to game for the AI surfaces. Google's AI features documentation is explicit that there are no additional requirements and no special schema.org markup needed to appear (AI features and your website); AI answers draw on the same quality and relevance systems as Search. See SEO for AI Mode & AI Overviews.
What actually helps:
- Answer one question per video, clearly. A video titled and structured around one task is easy to match to a query and easy to cite.
- Be mentioned in other people's videos. Reviews, comparisons and tutorials by independent creators are how brands show up when AI answers summarise "what people say". Earn these the way you earn digital PR: send products, offer data, appear as a guest. Do not pay for undisclosed mentions; Google's AI optimisation guide (May 15, 2026) calls seeking inauthentic mentions not as helpful as it might seem, and the same day Google said its spam policies apply to generative AI responses.
- Claim your Search profile if you are eligible. Google's documentation (updated September 16, 2026) says people who follow your Search profile are more likely to see your content, including YouTube videos, in Discover. See Google Discover.
Embedding on your own site: VideoObject with creator#
If you also embed the video on a dedicated watch page on your site, mark it up with VideoObject. On September 24, 2026 Google added the creator property to its video structured data docs (with author also supported) and documented the interactionStatistic types it understands: WatchAction, LikeAction, CommentAction and ShareAction (Video structured data).
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "VideoObject",
"name": "How to Replace a Bike Chain in 5 Minutes",
"description": "Remove, measure, cut and join a new chain with a quick link.",
"thumbnailUrl": ["https://example.com/video/bike-chain/thumb-16x9.jpg"],
"uploadDate": "2026-09-30T08:00:00+00:00",
"duration": "PT5M12S",
"embedUrl": "https://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID",
"creator": {
"@type": "Person",
"name": "Sam Rivera",
"url": "https://example.com/about/sam-rivera"
}
}
</script>name, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate are required. Markup has to describe what is visible on the page, and it earns video features in Search, not AI citations. The full checklist is in Structured Data.
Measuring YouTube SEO#
Use two tools, because they measure different surfaces.
YouTube Studio covers YouTube itself: impressions, impressions click-through rate, average view duration, and traffic sources, where "YouTube search" lists the queries that found you on YouTube.
Search Console platform properties cover Google. Since July 29, 2026 you can add your YouTube channel (and Instagram, TikTok or X accounts) as a Search Console property and see clicks, impressions and queries for that content on Google Search, Discover and News, plus Insights and Achievements reports (Google, July 7, 2026). Google's companion guide suggests using the Insights report's query groups to plan new videos, the 24-hour view to spot spikes worth cross-promoting, and annotations to track whether a retitled video changed its Google performance (Google, July 29, 2026).
| Question | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Which YouTube searches find my videos? | YouTube Studio, traffic source: YouTube search |
| Which Google searches find my channel? | Search Console platform property, Performance report |
| Did a new title lift Google clicks? | Platform property with an annotation on the change date |
| Are videos on my own site indexed? | Your site's Search Console property, Video indexing report |
| Am I appearing in AI answers? | Your site's Generative AI performance report, plus manual checks; see Measuring AI Visibility |
