Voice Search & Conversational SEO

Voice search in 2026 runs on AI assistants like Search Live in AI Mode and Gemini. How spoken queries differ, what to write, and what speakable really covers.

What you'll learn

  • Describe how voice search works in 2026, from Search Live in AI Mode to Gemini on speakers.
  • Write answers that work when read aloud and when shown with links on screen.
  • Explain why speakable markup only matters for US English news publishers.
  • Prepare a local business for spoken, implicit-location and AI-calling queries.
  • Measure voice indirectly through the surfaces that feed it.

Voice search and typed search draw on the same index. What changed between 2023 and 2026 is the front end. Google shut down third-party Conversational Actions for Assistant in June 2023, and its voice experiences now run on Gemini:

  • Search Live lets you talk to Search in AI Mode, with the camera on if you want. Since 2026-03-26 it works in every language and location where AI Mode is offered (200+ countries and territories). It answers aloud and shows web links to explore.
  • Gemini is taking over from Google Assistant: Google announced Gemini for Home as the replacement for Assistant on its smart speakers and displays (early access in the US from October 2025), and Google has been replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android phones.
  • Other assistants matter too. Apple's crawler, Applebot, feeds Spotlight, Siri and Safari, and Amazon documents an Amzn-SearchBot for search experiences including Alexa. Blocking these bots removes you from those answers (see AI Crawlers & Bot Access).

So "voice SEO" in 2026 is mostly AEO and GEO with a spoken output. The queries differ, and the output is shorter, but the work is the same: be the clearest, most trustworthy answer.

How voice queries are different#

Typed searchSpoken search
Query styleKeyword fragments ("best SEO tool")Full sentences ("what's the best SEO tool for a small business?")
Follow-upsA new search each timeA conversation that keeps context
Common startersNouns, adjectives"how do I", "what is", "where can I", "which is better"
Result formatA results page with many optionsA spoken summary, usually with links on screen
Local intentOften explicit ("near me")Often implicit ("where can I get a passport photo today?")

Google has not published voice-specific query lengths, but it said in October 2025 that people ask AI Mode questions "nearly three times longer than traditional searches." Conversational interfaces, spoken or typed, push queries toward full questions with context.

The output difference matters most. A smart speaker still reads one answer. Search Live and Gemini read a synthesized answer and then offer sources. Either way there is no list of ten options to scroll: you are either part of the answer or invisible.

Writing for spoken answers#

Match conversational language#

Spoken questions are complete sentences, and answers read aloud need to be easy to follow by ear. A rule of thumb (opinion, not a Google guideline): aim for plain language around a US grade 8 to 10 reading level. Short sentences, active voice, no jargon without a definition. That is writing for listening, not "dumbing down".

Answer questions like questions#

Organize content around question headings and answer in the first sentence after each one.

## How long does it take to rank on Google?

Most sites see measurable ranking improvements 3 to 6 months after
consistent SEO work starts, though competitive queries can take
12 months or more to reach page one.

The heading matches a real spoken question. The answer comes first, in under 60 words, with no build-up. This is the same shape that wins featured snippets and gets quoted by AI answers.

Implicit local intent is everywhere#

"Where can I fix my phone screen?" never mentions a location, but it is a local query. Local businesses need content and Google Business Profile data that satisfies implicit local intent. Two 2025 to 2026 changes raise the stakes:

  • AI business calling: since July 2025, Google's AI can call local businesses in the US to check pricing and availability for a searcher. Businesses control this in their Business Profile settings.
  • Ask Maps (March 2026) brings Gemini conversations to Google Maps, drawing on places and reviews.

Keep name, address, phone, hours, services and prices consistent everywhere. When an assistant reads them aloud to someone ready to call or visit, a wrong detail is immediately obvious and damages trust.

Speakable schema (news publishers only)#

speakable marks the parts of an article that are suitable for text-to-speech. Google's documentation (updated 2026-09-08) is narrow:

  • It is a beta feature and subject to change
  • It is for news content (Article or WebPage from news publishers) answering topical news queries
  • It works for users in the US with Google Home devices set to English, for publishers writing in English
Speakable markup for a news article
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org/",
  "@type": "NewsArticle",
  "headline": "City council approves new cycle lanes",
  "speakable": {
    "@type": "SpeakableSpecification",
    "cssSelector": [".article-summary", ".article-lede"]
  },
  "url": "https://example-news.com/council-cycle-lanes"
}

Content formats that work for voice#

FAQ sections#

Direct question-and-answer pairs remain one of the most efficient investments for spoken answers. Keep each answer under about 60 words. Note that FAQPage markup no longer earns a rich result (since 2026-05-07), so the value is in the content, not the schema. See Structured Data.

How-to content#

Step-by-step instructions can be read one step at a time. Use a real numbered list. HowTo rich results were retired in 2023, so do not add HowTo markup expecting a feature.

Definition-first content#

For "what is X" questions, put the definition in the first sentence, then add context. Never build up to the definition.

Content that works with a camera#

Search Live and Google Lens let people point a camera and ask. Clear product images, descriptive file names and alt text, and pages that name products and parts precisely help you show up for "what is this and how do I fix it?" questions. See Image & Video SEO.

Measuring voice search performance#

Voice is hard to attribute:

  • Spoken answers often end without a click
  • Search Console does not separate spoken queries from typed ones
  • Voice visits that convert often arrive later as direct or branded traffic

Practical proxies:

  • Featured snippet and PAA wins for question-shaped queries
  • AI Mode visibility in Search Console's Generative AI performance report (impressions only)
  • The "multimodal" search type (added 2026-09-24) for Lens, Circle to Search and image searches, a proxy for camera-led questions, not voice
  • Business Profile calls, direction requests and website clicks for local voice
  • Branded search growth, since a spoken recommendation often leads to a later branded search

Not being able to measure voice directly does not make it worthless. You measure the surfaces that feed it.
