This is the tactical companion to What is AEO?: concrete formats and a repeatable process for the two classic answer surfaces. Both are still live in October 2026, but they now share the page with AI Overviews, which changes how much a win is worth.
Google is clear that you cannot request a featured snippet with markup: its systems decide whether a page "would make a good featured snippet" and elevate it. What you control is how easy your answer is to extract.
The four snippet formats#
Google chooses the format from the shape of the query. Build content to match.
1. Paragraph snippets (most common)#
For "what is", "why" and "how does" queries. Win condition: a self-contained definition or explanation of roughly 40 to 60 words (an industry rule of thumb) directly under the question heading.
## What is a canonical tag?
A canonical tag (rel="canonical") is an HTML element that tells
search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page when
the same content is reachable at multiple addresses. It consolidates
ranking signals onto one URL and prevents duplicate-content dilution.2. List snippets#
For "steps to", "best ways" and "checklist" queries. Win condition: an ordered (<ol>) or unordered (<ul>) HTML list under the matching heading. Google truncates long lists with "More items", which can earn clicks, so a complete list of 8 or more items is not a problem.
3. Table snippets#
For comparisons, prices, specs and sizes. Win condition: a real <table> (not a styled div grid) with clear headers. Good tables are scarce relative to demand, so this is often the easiest type to take.
4. Video snippets#
For visual how-tos. Win condition: a well-titled video, usually on YouTube, with chapters so Google can link to a "suggested clip". See YouTube SEO and Image & Video SEO.
The snippet-winning process#
1. TARGET queries with an existing snippet where you rank #2 to #10
(snippets are usually drawn from pages already ranking
on page one)
2. ANALYZE the current snippet: format, length, what is missing
3. MATCH the format, executed better: more precise, more current,
properly self-contained
4. PLACE the answer immediately after a heading that mirrors
the query
5. REQUEST indexing with URL Inspection in Search Console, then
track the query for 2 to 6 weeksSources for step 1: the "SERP features" filters in Ahrefs or Semrush (your keywords plus "featured snippet, not owned"), or cross-referencing question queries from Search Console against the live results.
Winning People Also Ask#
PAA boxes are recursive (expanding one question loads more), and each question is a mini snippet with its own competition. Two patterns harvest them:
- FAQ sections on existing pages: 4 to 8 real questions (from PAA itself, keyword tools and support tickets), each answered in 40 to 60 words. Note what changed: FAQ rich results stopped showing for every site on 2026-05-07, and Google removed the FAQPage documentation on 2026-06-15. The section helps readers and extraction; the markup no longer earns a visual feature. Keeping existing valid FAQPage markup is harmless.
- Question-shaped headings inside topic clusters: phrase each spoke page's H2s and H3s as the questions people actually ask (heading guidance).
PAA wins are small individually but they compound: dozens of owned slots add up to constant brand presence in your niche, and they cover the same sub-questions that AI answers fan out to.
Defending owned snippets#
Snippets churn, and core updates move them too (trade press reported featured snippet swings during the May 2026 core update). Once you own one:
- Keep the answer current. Refresh numbers and dates; staleness is a common reason snippets flip. See Content Refresh & Decay.
- Do not restructure casually. Heading or answer edits can lose the box. If you must edit, keep the question, answer, evidence shape.
- Monitor owned snippets in your rank tracker with alerts on loss.
Snippet controls and what each one costs#
| Control | Scope | Effect on featured snippets | Effect on AI Overviews and AI Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet"> | Page | No snippet of any kind | Content not used as a direct input |
max-snippet:[number] | Page | A low limit can prevent a featured snippet | Limits how much text can be used |
data-nosnippet attribute | Part of a page | That text cannot appear in snippets | That text is not used as a direct input |
| Search generative AI setting (Search Console) | Property | None | Excludes the site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features |
The last row is new. Since 2026-08-31 every site can opt out of Google's AI features in Search Console (Settings > Search generative AI) without losing snippets, and Google says the setting is not a ranking or inclusion signal elsewhere in Search. Before that, the snippet controls in the first three rows were the main way to limit AI use, at the cost of your snippets.
If you want the snippet to tease rather than give everything away, withhold a specific block, not the whole page:

</div>When snippets are worth less#
Measure before and after. Amsive's study of 700,000 keywords (April 2025) found average CTR about 15% lower when an AI Overview appeared, and about 37% lower when an AI Overview and a featured snippet appeared together. For commercial queries where you monetize the click, the trade can be poor. For most informational queries, owning the answer still beats a competitor owning it, because the visibility and brand recall go to the source. Model the click value with your own Search Console data rather than a single industry number.
