Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search systems can extract it and present it as a direct answer: in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, AI Overviews, AI Mode and spoken responses. Classic SEO competes for a position in a list. AEO competes to be the response itself, or to be one of the few sources it cites.
Why AEO became its own discipline#
Three shifts made answers a target in their own right:
- Zero-click search. SparkToro's clickstream study (US, January to April 2026) found 68% of Google searches ended without a click to any website, up from about 60% in its 2024 study. When the click is scarce, the impression and the attribution go to whoever supplied the answer.
- AI answers at scale. Google said at I/O on 2026-05-19 that AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. Pew Research (March 2025 browsing data) found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without. The patterns that win snippets are the same patterns generative systems quote, which makes AEO the on-ramp to GEO.
- Conversational and voice interfaces. Google's voice experiences now run on Gemini (Search Live in AI Mode, Gemini on phones and smart speakers). They read back one synthesized answer, often with links on screen. See Voice Search.
The answer surfaces in October 2026#
| Surface | Status | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
| Featured snippet | Live. Google chooses it; no markup can request it | A concise passage under a matching heading, from a page already ranking well |
| People Also Ask | Live | Short, direct answers to related questions |
| AI Overviews | Live, triggers only when Google judges it "additive" | Pages in the index that are eligible for a snippet; see AI Mode & AI Overviews |
| AI Mode | Live in 200+ countries and territories (since 2025-10-07) | The same eligibility, plus coverage of the sub-questions it fans out to |
| Knowledge panel | Live | Clear entity information; see Entity SEO |
| FAQ rich result | Gone since 2026-05-07 (docs removed 2026-06-15) | Nothing. FAQ sections still help readers |
| HowTo rich result | Gone since 2023 | Nothing |
How answer extraction works#
Answer engines add a step after ranking: from the set of relevant, trusted pages, pick a passage that answers the question directly. Google can rank a specific section of your page on its own, and its AI features retrieve pages from the same index before they write a response.
What extraction systems need from you:
- A passage that is self-contained, so it makes sense without the surrounding text
- Next to a matching heading, phrased the way users ask
- Concise. Paragraph snippets tend to run about 40 to 60 words (an industry rule of thumb, not a Google limit)
- From a page with adequate standing. Extraction inherits your classic SEO; AEO is a layer on top of rankings, not a bypass
Google also says there is "no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI." Self-contained sections are about clarity for readers, not about slicing pages into fragments.
The core pattern: question, answer, evidence#
Structure answer-intent content like this:
## How long does Google take to index a new page? <- H2/H3 = the question
Most new pages on established sites are indexed within <- 40-60 word
a few days to two weeks. Brand-new domains can take direct answer,
longer. You can speed this up by submitting the URL in self-contained
Search Console and linking to the page from crawled pages.
[expanded detail, nuance, data, examples follow...] <- depth for humans
and rankingsThe answer paragraph serves extraction; everything after it serves readers and the page's overall ranking. This is the inverted pyramid from Content Optimization, applied per section.
Finding answer opportunities#
Target queries where answer surfaces already exist:
- PAA mining: expand People Also Ask chains for your topic and collect every question. Each is a slot you can compete for.
- Search Console: question-shaped queries where you rank #2 to #10. You are relevant; you need extraction-friendly formatting. Query groups in Search Console Insights (October 2025) help cluster them.
- Snippet competitors: queries where a weaker page holds the snippet with a worse-structured answer.
Formats that harvest these well: FAQ sections written from real customer questions, a glossary (one curated page, like the SEO Glossary, not thousands of thin "what is X" pages), and how-to guides with numbered steps.
What structured data can and cannot do#
Schema markup does not award featured snippets and is not required for AI features. Google's May 2026 guide is explicit: there is "no special schema.org markup you need to add" for generative AI search. What markup still does:
- Makes pages eligible for the rich results that remain (Article, Product, Recipe, Q&A for user-generated answers, Video and others listed in Structured Data)
- Helps machines identify your organization, authors and products as entities
What it no longer does: FAQPage earns no rich result since 2026-05-07, and HowTo earns none since 2023. You can keep valid FAQPage markup (it is harmless), but do not promise a client a SERP feature from it. speakable is a beta feature for US English news publishers only (see Voice Search).
Controlling how your answers are used#
Being extracted is usually what you want, but you have levers:
nosnippet,max-snippetanddata-nosnippetlimit what Google can show as a snippet, and Google's robots meta documentation saysnosnippetalso stops the content being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.- Since 2026-08-31 every site worldwide also has a Search Console setting (Settings > Search generative AI) that excludes the site from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features without touching normal snippets. Details and trade-offs are in SEO for AI Mode & AI Overviews.
Measuring AEO#
- Search Console Performance: filter by queries starting with question words. A snippet win usually shows as position about 1 with a changed CTR (up for some queries, down for others when the answer satisfies on the page).
- Generative AI performance report in Search Console: impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode (no clicks or queries). See Measuring AI Visibility.
- Rank trackers flag which keywords show snippets and PAA and whether you own them.
- Expect lower CTR on answered queries, and use ranges. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% lower position-1 CTR when an AI Overview appeared (March 2025 data) and about 58% lower in a December 2025 re-run. Amsive (April 2025) measured an average CTR drop of about 15% with an AI Overview. Studies differ by sample and period, so treat them as directional.
An owned answer that costs some clicks still usually beats a competitor owning it: the visibility, brand recall and citations go to the extracted source.
